Grand as usual. This Robicheaux novel offers a picture of corruption, underlying violence, quest for justice and social frustrations and fights that is unique. The characters are both appealing and disgusting (the bad ones) or torn between higher values and down-to-earth passions. Unmistakable Clete and guilt-ridden Dave display a complexity of buoyancy, reflection, strength and feebleness that feeds the plot with human interest to the very last moment.
